Aquamarine - March

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family. It's colour ranges from greenish blue to blue-green in light tones. The name aquamarine derives from the Latin word meaning "sea water".

Aquamarine is a highly sought-after gemstone. The deeper blue hues command the highest prices. These stones are commonly referred to as "Santa Maria" after the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in Brazil where many of these high quality stones were originally mined. Unfortunately the mine is not producing many gemstones at this time. Most of the world's high quality stones are being mined in Africa are referred to as "Santa Maria Africana".  

Most stones have been heat-treated to enhance their colour. This is a commonly accepted form of gem treatment. Aquamarines with a slight hint of green indicate that the stone may not have been heat treated.

Aquamarine is said to give it's wearer insight and foresight.
